How to Transition to fall style when it’s still warm (or hot!) outside
The fall transition period – school has started, fall is on the horizon, but it’s still so hot here in Arkansas. Here are some ideas to start shifting away from summer style and into more fall looks even when the temperatures aren’t quiet cooperating yet!
Let’s talk through the ideas and lots of options that fit each one:
Let’s talk through the ideas and lots of options that fit each one:
-
Wear short sleeve or lightweight tops in fall colors and prints- Wearing short sleeve or lightweight tops that are in fall colors or prints is a great way to stay cool while dressing with a fall vibe. Prints like leopard, plaid, and camo work great here. A great example of this is the plaid half sleeve top below. It’s got a great fall color and pattern, but the half sleeve won’t be too much for late summer/early fall Arkansas temperatures. Another great example is the camo top from Mud Pie. It’s lightweight, sleeves can be pushed up, AND its slouchy and comfortable. Bonus: it’s one size fits most! If prints aren’t your thing, there are lots of solid colored, short sleeved options like this scoop neck top in burgundy (available in regular and plus) and the mock neck top in purple dusty.
-
Choose shoes with a heavier, fall feel
When choosing footwear this time of year, steer more toward those with a heavier feel. It’s still too hot for booties, but sandals and flats in leather and suede make good options. The heavier foot bed on the Birk’s below add weight to an outfit, and the Khaki colored slip-ons from Taos work well here, too. This Corduroy slip on from Corky’s is a great transition shoe option as well. It’s lightweight, but gets texture from the Corduroy that makes it look like fall.
-
Cardigans, jackets, shackets, blazers and kimonos -- all great items to add to your outfits this time of year. They can be worn over tanks, tees and dresses (more on that below). If it’s cool inside, wear the layer. If its warm outside, take off the layer.
The standout amongst all the layer options is definitely a denim jacket like the one below. It’s a wardrobe workhorse. It can be layered over almost anything, the sleeves can be rolled up or left down, and it’s cute tied around your waist. A denim jacket that fits you well is an absolute investment. Another layer that could be considered a closet staple is a utility jacket like the one pictured. It’s a light layer, and it goes with so many things.
-
Grab a few lightweight dresses
This is a great strategy that gives the most bang for your buck! Dresses can be worn now while its warm and then layered with tights and boots later in the year which means you get multiple outfits from one purchase.

Easy bonus tip: Change up your accessories!
Accessories are a fun, easy way to bring in a new season, and Martin’s has lots of options to choose from. Go for those in rich fall colors and textures. This can be earrings, hats or bags like the ones below.
